Your Portrait Session Doesn't Have to be Perfect | Morgantown Family Photographer

Can I let you in on a little secret? Your family photos don't have to be perfect. Actually, some of my favorite photographs are the ones where things didn't go exactly according to plan! Think, toddlers constantly on the move, siblings being goofy instead of "smiling for the camera," or dogs who decide to photobomb a shot they weren't originally supposed to be in! There's also the little hands reaching for mom, the belly laughs, and the genuine connection between moments that mean so much to me because those moments are real.

So Relax! Your Family Can Be Themselves

I know the pressure parents can feel before family photos. You want everyone to smile. You want everyone to cooperate. You want everyone to look at the camera...you might spend the entire drive to your session saying some variation of: "I'll buy you a new toy if you smile for these photos." (I've been there LOL)

But here's what I want you to know: Your children don't have to perform for me. YOU don't have to perform for me. I don't need everyone sitting perfectly still for an hour, in fact, I don't want that at all. I want to see who you guys actually are.

So, let's let them be kids.

We'll play. We'll walk. Maybe we'll race! And perhaps we'll snuggle. Maybe we'll tell ridiculous jokes, or I'll ask them questions. They might show me their favorite rock they found on the ground and yes, I will probably photograph it. They might want to make up their own poses! I'm here for it all. The little things that seem completely insignificant in the moment often become the things you miss as time goes on.

Connection matters more than perfection during your Morgantown portrait session.

Years from now, do you think you're going to care that your child's shirt was slightly wrinkled?

Probably not. Grass stains on the knees become small details you'll cherish. And of course, you'll care about the way those sweet faces looked at you, the way their tiny hand fit into yours, the way your children laughed together...You'll care about how it felt to have everyone you love in one place. And that right there is my job. Capturing connection. Not perfection.

"Imperfect” photographs are the best ones.

One of my favorite things about lifestyle family photography is that it gives us room for those moments. The ones where your family looks exactly like… your family. Those photographs tell a story, and your story doesn't need to be perfect to be beautiful.

So take a deep breath.

Don't worry if your toddler has a meltdown. I'm used to it! I'll guide you and keep things moving. Most importantly, I'll make room for your family to simply be your family. When you view your photos, I want you to see your people, exactly as they were, exactly as you loved them.

Let's create photographs that feel like your family.

If you've been putting off family photographs because you're worried your kids won't cooperate, take this as your sign. They don't have to be perfect. They just have to show up. I'll take care of the rest.
