What to Wear for Family Photos Without Losing Your Mind
Let's talk about one of the questions I hear ALL the time before a family photography session:
“What are we supposed to wear?”

Totally a fair question, don't worry! I feel you. You want everyone to look coordinated without looking like you all bought matching outfits at the same store. You want colors that photograph beautifully. You want everyone to feel comfortable. And you'd really prefer if your kids didn't spend the entire session complaining about what they're wearing. (Let's face it, if my daughter doesn't have something pink or Paw Patrol, she's likely not wearing it haha)
The good news is, you don't need matching outfits. You simply need outfits that work together. But how do you get there?
Start with one outfit you love.
Instead of trying to choose everyone's clothes at once, start with one person. Maybe it's Mom's dress, your daughter's adorable sweater, or a shirt your son already owns and loves. Choose one outfit that fits the overall feel you want, and build everyone else around it. This narrows everything down and makes the process SO much easier.

Think coordinating—not matching.
If everyone is wearing the exact same color, your photographs can start to feel a little too uniform. Instead, think about a color palette!
Soft neutrals.
Warm earth tones.
Creams and tans.
Muted blues and greens.
Soft patterns mixed with solids.
You want the colors to complement each other without looking identical.
And don't be afraid to add texture! Knits, linen, denim, corduroy, layers, and soft fabrics can all add beautiful visual interest to your family photographs!
Comfort matters more than you think.
This is especially important with children. If your toddler hates the itchy sweater, we're going to know about it. If your teenager can't move in their outfit, they're probably not going to feel very confident. And if Dad has been complaining about his uncomfortable shoes since the moment he put them on…Well, let's just say I'm probably going to hear about that, too. 😉
Choose clothes that allow everyone to move, because family photographs aren't just about standing still...We're going to walk, snuggle, play, and laugh! Your clothes should let you do all of that.

Don't forget about the little details.
Shoes, accessories, and hair matter! And yes—even socks matter if they're going to peek out underneath those pants! You don't have to go overboard, but thinking through the details ahead of time can make the finished photographs feel much more polished.
And please… don't forget about YOU.
This might be my biggest piece of advice! Moms are often so focused on making sure everyone else looks perfect that they put themselves last. Don't do that. Choose something you feel beautiful in! You want to feel comfortable, able to move, and most importantly, you want to feel like you. For a little while, you aren't just the person behind the camera—or the person making sure everyone else has brushed their hair. You're in it WITH your family. Treat yourself. :)
